Whether a teaching is a good career depends on what options you have. If you like to be abused maybe teaching is for you, but really, you will never get respect that you truly desire. If you can put up with disrespectful students, then you will be fine. It maybe seems to you that teachers get respect, but in reality, they never get respect that they crave and desire. Teachers give out more than they receive. You have to be the "adult" and you have to act in appropriate manner to the rudest people you'll ever meet. You will never feel as you "caught up" and you will never feel as you pleased everyone. If you don't care about pleasing people and you can put up with abuse and rude students then maybe teaching is for you. There are so many teachers who would love to quit because they hate to hate students. You can't always have loving feeling to someone who disrespects you and abuse you constantly, that's why many teachers quit and pursue more emotionally fulfilling careers. More about teaching as a career Also, you need to know how to be rude sometimes and have qualities of a leader. It doesn't always depend on your desire to be great, but how people perceive you. If despite all the abuse that you'll endure you still believe teaching is great then maybe it's for you. Talk to teachers or former teachers who did quit. Ask their opinion. Spend time in classroom and talk to other teachers. Maybe you could be happier in teaching art comparing to math or science. Many students are a lot more nervous and angry about math tests and art projects. More options for teaching What about teaching a college? Teaching college can be less stressful for you, so it would be fine, but you would have to worry about getting an advanced degree or full time/ or part time hours. Sometimes you would have to relocate because teaching in college could be more competitive to find full time work. As far as teaching public school, it's very emotionally draining. You really have to believe in something good to put up with unwanted behavior. You need to learn to be intimidating. Your personality could change for the worse though having to deal with rudest people. The last advice is just go and try it, but always look for some better options. Teaching in public school isn't the best lifestyle for anybody. You have to put up with disrespect and you can't fire them. Everything that they do wrong would you be your fault only. If you find a really good school and teach older students you could be much happier though. |
